ABSTRACT:The rhizome essential oil of Iris germanica, known as oil of orris or orris butter, is an important commodity in the perfume industry. In this work, nine samples of Iris germanica rhizomes were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography. The essential oils were dominated by fatty acids, particularly caprylic acid (4.1-29.3%), capric acid (13.3-25.4%), lauric acid (19.3-64.5%), and myristic acid (8.4-54.2%). However, the important perfume components, the irones, were negligible (0.0-0.1%).
