Abstract: The leaf essential oil of Zanthoxylum sp. A “Peñas Blancas” (Rutaceae), from Monteverde, Costa Rica, was isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 12 compounds were identified in the leaf oil accounting for 100% of the total composition. The most abundant components of the essential oil of Zanthoxylum sp. A “Peñas Blancas” were citronellal (23.3%), limonene (16.7%), trans-pinocamphone (11.6%), and β-pinene (10.8%).  A cluster analysis comparison with previously published leaf oil compositions of Zanthoxylum species revealed a high degree of interspecific as well as intraspecific variation in the genus.
